Welcome to Indian Institute of Remote Sensing!

International Collaboration

ITC (The Netherlands)  A collaborative project between IIRS and ITC, covering the period 1995-2000 was directed at upgrading staff capabilities, facilities in the field of Geoinformation Systems and applications for natural resources development and environmental plannning and management.

In India, now a days, the development of natural resources is more and more confronted with limiting factors that prevent a sustainable development, especially due to occurrence of natural disasters, and an increasing need exits in capacity building and training in the field of Geoinformatics for Environmental Assessment and Disaster Management.

To augment this, the second phase of the SAIL institutional development cooperation with IIRS will focus on minimizing environmental degradation and disaster generated sufferings using technology of Geoinformatics. The project will focus on capacity building, development of course curricula, applications by developing case studies and establishing infrastructure. The interface will be strengthened through networking, sharing experience and probing technology know how. The, Delft and WU, Wageningen are also partners for this second phase project.
GDTA (France) Under Indo-French collaboration an understanding has been arrived with ISRO to collaborate in the field of training and education. A memorandum of understanding has been signed on May,1999 between ISRO and GDTA (France) for mutual cooperatino in training, education and research in remote sensing and GIS applications for Natural Resource Management. To start with, the cooperation focuses in following areas.
* Exchange of post-graduate diploma (IIRS) and CETEL (GDTA) students for project assignment.
* Faculty exchange for consultation on curriculum.
* Sharing of experience in the specialized areas.
ITTO/JOFCA (Japan) IIRS is actively involved in International Tropical Timber Organisation (ITTO) project for the formulation and development of Forest Canopy Density Mapping using semi- expert system. It is a collaboration with South East Asian countries to develop robust techniques for Forest Density Stratification. ITTO has recognized the Institute to conduct regular training programmes for forest officers of ITTO member countries in Forest Canopy Density mapping. Under this programme, IIRS and JOFCA (Japan Over- -seas Forestry Consultancy Association) have organized two training programmes for ITTO member countries.
UNESCO UNESCO has recognised IIRS as training centre in capacity building for disaster red- -uction programme under IIRS ITC IHE WUR initiative on Geoinformatics for environ- -mental assessment and disaster management. Under this programme IIRS will org- -anise several training programmes on disaster reduction and mitigation for various developing countries. First such course has been organized with CSSTEAP during Aug-Sept. 2002 wherein UNESCO has provided six scholarships from South-Asian countries.
WMO IIRS has established linkages with World Meteorological Organisation (WMO), located at Geneva, Switzerland. The major objectives of this linkage are capacity building through training and education, joint research in the fields of satellite remote sensing and GIS applications in agro-meteorology, hydro-meteorological and environmental disaster management. Recently held training workshop (RA II) on satellite remote sensing and GIS applications in Agricultural Meteorology at IIRS, was the first step under this linkage.
